Tatlayoko Lake: Chilcotin Wilderness Wonder

By: Troy Lee + Save to a List

Squeezed between BC’s Coast and Interior mountains, Tatlayoko Lake is an outdoors person’s paradise.  With stunning mountainscapes, rustic rangeland and access to endless mountain biking, hiking, paddling and windsurfing, this area should be on the top of your bucket list.

Tatlayoko Lake is part of the traditional territory of the Tsilhqot’in First Nation and only three hours west of Williams Lake on HWY 20 (about half way to Bella Coola). This lake is also part of the Homathco River-Tatlayoko Protected Area and the Nature Conservancies’ Tatlayoko Ranch, a working ranch that protects  important ecosystems.

Stay at one of the rustic B&B’s in the area or camp at the Forest Service Rec Site on the lake. Once there, you can walk or ride the western shoreline for several kms. Access is at the northern tip of the lake and along the east side. Be sure to close any gate that you find closed! Explore the old ranch roads and trails throughout the area. Bring a GPS unit or a good topo map so you don't get lost.

For more info about this fantastic Chilcotin Plateau wilderness area go to Ride the Wild and check out the maps and links to accommodations.
