You’re hungry for new challenges and ready to push the edges of your comfort zone. On this all-women’s course, rock climbing will be your new challenge, whether you’re a beginner or coming in with years of experience. You’ll spend your course in Arizona’s Cochise Stronghold, an area renowned for its climbing and unique desert environment. You’ll start with the basics of climbing, including movement on rock and getting to know the equipment. As you gain competence, you’ll progress to more advanced skills like anchor building and mock lead climbing. In addition to climbing, you’ll explore the area’s local ecology and human history. You’ll see desert wildlife in its natural environment and may visit historic sites that contain artifacts and pictographs. In the evening, you’ll enjoy cooking your meals together at your group’s base camp and absorbing the quiet of the desert. In addition to climbing skills, you’ll also focus on growing as a leader. Setting climbing goals becomes a lesson in self-leadership, while living in a small community becomes your opportunity to work on skills like communication. On other days, you may focus on assessing risk and developing judgment to make decisions when you’re climbing. From these experiences, you’ll find and strengthen your own leadership style. By the end of this course, you’ll have the leadership and outdoor skills to prepare you for a lifetime of exploring.

    Additional Information

    NOLS Prime:

NOLS Prime Expeditions are immersive 1- to 3- week wilderness experiences designed exclusively for adults 23 and over. Our mission is to be educators, not guides. This means while learning how to climb, sail, backpack and more, you’re getting experience making decisions and mentorship from your instructors on managing risk with your group—with the goal that when your course is done you are ready to lead friends and family on your own wilderness trips! Vacations are great for a week or two away but wouldn’t you rather go beyond?

    NOLS Southwest:

Discover the rich and varied landscapes of the U.S. Southwest on your next adventure. Arriving on campus, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an iconic desert landscape dotted with saguaros and ocotillo. But the Southwest has far more to offer than sand and cacti—the wilderness classrooms you’ll explore range from desert terrain to ponderosa pine forests and narrow river canyons. The technical skills you can learn here are just as varied: hiking, climbing, lightweight backpacking, whitewater canoeing, and caving. Backpack through the “sky islands,” isolated mountain ranges that rise up out of vast expanses of desert. Canoe the Rio Grande or climb granite crags at Cochise Stronghold, notable for its cultural and historical importance to the Apache as well as its climbing routes. The U.S. Southwest has a far-reaching and ongoing history of human presence, from the traces of ancient cultures you’ll see at Cliff Dwellings National Monument to the stories of indigenous communities, past and present, and water rights on the U.S./Mexico border. On semester courses, you’ll have the rare privilege of going caving, exploring underground in what feels like another world. And on every course, you’ll be captivated by the magic of the desert—the diversity and beauty of a landscape that you might’ve pictured as barren and empty.
