Itinerary

Fly from Chengdu to Lhasa

This morning we take the one hour flight from Chengdu to Lhasa. On arrival at Lhasa Airport you will be transferred to the city – a drive that takes around two hours. The afternoon is set aside to rest and acclimitise.

In Lhasa

Three days are scheduled in Lhasa to appreciate its rich cultural history. We include visits to the Jokhang, the Norbulingka (the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama), and the famous Potala Palace. We also include visits to the nearby monasteries of Drepung and Sera.

To Tsedang

Located 170km Southeast of Lhasa in the picturesque Yarlung Valley, the Tsedang region is home to many historical sites (approximate driving time is 2-3 hours). We will visit Thadruk Droma Monastery which houses a famous pearl Thangka. We will overnight at a local hotel.

Visit to Samye Monastery

Samye Monastery was the first Buddhist monastery built in Tibet. It is nestled in a spectacular valley and a visit to Tibet would not be complete without a visit to this significant site. The first Tibetan monks were ordained at Samye, and are known as the ‘Seven Examined Men’. Our visit to Samye is a highlight of our entire journey. Overnight at local hotel. (It is approximately 2 - 3 hour driving time from Tsedang to the Sayme Monsastery.)

In Lhasa

The drive back to Lhasa is approximately 2-3 hours and we will arrive in Lhasa around 1:00 pm. The rest of the day is at leisure in Lhasa.

Return flight to Chengdu where trip concludes

This morning we make the drive back to Lhasa Airport for our return flight to Chengdu. On arrival in Chengdu our trip concludes.

Additional Information

This is the ideal short trip to explore the ancient city of Lhasa and some of its surrounding monasteries and other cultural highlights. We include visits to the Jokhang, the Norbulingka (the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama), the famous Potala Palace as well as side trips to the nearby monasteries of Drepung, Sera or Tsurpu. Sera Monastery is located approximately 5km north of the Jokang and includes 19 hermitages, including four nunneries, which are all located in the foot hills north of Lhasa. Visiting these ancient Buddhist sites, including Samye, the first monastery established in Tibet, will give you a fantastic insight into both ancient and modern life within Tibet. This short trip can also be added before or after any of our other Himalayan departures.
