Highlights

  • Ride Iron Mountain Road, a 17-mile work of art that engineers once said couldn't be built. The ride passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills- like "Pigtail Bridges"
  • Hike Trail Number 9 to the summit of Black Elk Peak. This popular hiking trail climbs 1,100 ft to an open summit with spectacular views of the surrounding hills
  • Visit cool, clear, mountain lakes - with plenty of time to take refreshing dip
  • Visit Wind Cave National Park, where we will tour a cave rich in honeycomb-shaped calcite formations known as boxwork
  • Mountain bike on the Mickelson Trail, the state's first rails to trails project. The Mickelson Trail is a crushed limestone and gravel route, with grades not exceeding 4 percent. It winds its way through the beautiful Black Hills and the gold mines of the Deadwood area
  • Overnight at State Game Lodge in the middle of Custer State Park. This historic stone and wood lodge was built in 1920 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

Day-to-Day

Day 1 (6.5 miles):  Meet in Rapid City, van shuttle to Badlands, hike Castle Trail

Day 2 (55 miles):  Bike Iron Mountain Road, visit Mt. Rushmore bike Needles Highway

Day 3:  Tour Wind Cave, ride horses, evening program

Day 4 (7 miles): Hike Black Elk Peak and swim in Sylvan Lake

Day 5 (40 miles): Mountain bike on the Mickelson trail

Day 6 (7 miles):  Hike on the Centennial trail
