Arrive Canmore. Expedition Planning.

Please make your way to Canmore, where we will meet in our office at 2pm for pre-trip planning. We will be looking at our objective in detail and be planning food, equipment needs, navigation and time plans and doing hazard evaluations for the following day. We will also cover emergency procedures and ensure everyone is properly outfitted for the trip. The evening is free to relax and mentally prepare for the adventure ahead! Overnight centrally-located hotel in Canmore.

Drive to Saskatchewan Crossing and trek to camp

The expedition starts! We will drive the 2.5 hours to Saskatchewan Crossing where we will begin our approach to Mt Forbes via Glacier Lake. The trail past Glacier Lake is around 15 km and has only minor elevation gain. This will be a long day with full packs on our backs.

Trek to base camp

Expect another big day into a very remote part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This will be one of the most challenging days of the trip with a 10km hike and 900m of elevation gain. This remote area will require off trail route finding and navigation as well as some cold creek crossings. Our campsite will position us for our attempt on Mt Forbes.

Summit Day

With an alpine start, we will approach the West Ridge of Mt Forbes. The route will involve steep snow climbing of up to 40 degrees and occasional steps of easy rock scrambling. This will be done with the use of an ice axe and crampons. Reaching this rarely visited summit and enjoying the endless views in all directions will be a great reward. Return to camp for overnight.

Trek to Glacier Lake

We will retrace our steps to the head of Glacier Lake. Back packs will be lighter for our return trip to this established campground.

Complete trek and return to Canmore

A short day of hiking will return us to Saskatchewan Crossing and our vehicle. We will drive back to Canmore for the trip close and debrief. Dinner and accommodation is not included tonight, but we are happy to assist with your onward arrangements.

Additional Information

At 3,612 metres (11,851 feet) Mt. Forbes is the eighth highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and the highest peak entirely within Banff National Park. We will be approaching the pyramidical summit of Mt Forbes via the West Ridge route. With its remote position on the continental divide, Mt Forbes is a true alpine climbing expedition and one of the most outstanding climbs in the Rockies. For budding mountaineers and aspiring alpinists, this is a perfect opportunity to develop your mountaineering expedition skills gaining valuable insights and hands on participation into all the pre-expedition planning and logistics with our experienced guides, in addition to climbing this great summit. Participants must have completed a mountaineering skills course (such as Canadian Rockies Mountaineering Course) and we strongly recommend having completed an intermediate (Level 9) guided mountaineering program, or equivalent experience.
