Itinerary

Start Mestre, the mainland of Venice

Leave Venice by bike and vaporetto towards the city of Caorle; chance to swim in the sea en route

Leave the coast and pedal north towards an area known for its lagoons to reach the beautiful little town of Portogruaro

Continue to Palmanova and the ancient city of Aquileia. Lunch by the sea at Marano Lagunare is highly recommended

Option of a beautiful ride to the lagoon port of Grad, then a more hilly coastal ride through Duino, Sistiana and Miramare; arrive at Trieste

Time to explore impressive Trieste, then cross into Slovenia; pass through Koper and Piran before reaching the spa town of Portoroz

Cycle past the salt mines of Secovljie, then enter Croatia and tackle a few hills, passing the ancient port of Novigrad on the Istrian Coast before reaching Porec.

End Porec; optional ferry back to Venice

Following the northernmost tip of the Mediterranean, this self-guided cycle ride takes you through three countries in one week! Starting in Venice, the route heads eastwards, hugging the beautiful golden beaches of the Adriatic coast. Heading into the region of Friuli, you will pass sleepy fishing communes and the fascinating star-shaped city of Palmanova before turning south. Crossing the borders of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, it is hard to find a more fascinating concentration of culture anywhere else along the Adriatic.
