Itinerary

Join in Tehran, Acclimatisation Trek

Today you will meet with your local guide and driver in Tehran. Iran's capital city has some spectacular museums, palaces and gardens which are to be enjoyed in depth on our return visit to Tehran post trek. We transfer north from Tehran out into the Alborz mountain range. Once into the mountains, we'll stop for lunch at a nice local restaurant set on the banks of a river. Following lunch, we'll set out along the river valley, climbing to around 2,500m.Trek: ~3hrsNote: We recommend to arrive in-country at least a day prior as today can be tiring. Please ask your World Expeditions Adventure Travel Consultant for pre-tour accommodation arrangements. Overnight: Shelter in Palangchal

Trek to Tochal Peak

Today is a further acclimatisation day. Our trek will take us up to the 5th station of Tele-e-Cabin and then on up Mount Tochal. Mount Tochal has a 12km long main ridgeline which leads up to the summit at 3,964m. Once we've reached the summit and marveled at the spectacular views, we'll descend via the south ridge down to the Shirpala shelter which is at 2,750m. Trek: ~9hrs total (6hrs up, 3hrs down)Overnight: Shelter in Shirpala.

Trek to Darband

This morning we'll leave the shelter and continue our descent down to Darband village at 1,800m. The village lies in a delightful mountainous region within Northern Tehran. The views, whilst often hazy, will nevertheless bring to life the vastness of Tehran's urban sprawl. The local culinary delights awaiting at the cafes certainly make the hike worthwhile. Later in the afternoon we will make the 4hr drive up to Rineh which lies at 2,133m.Trek: ~3hrsOvernight: Local house in Rineh

Drive to Gosfandsara (3,050m) & trek to Bargah Sevom

After a hearty breakfast, we'll set out for a long day of trekking in order to reach our final destination for the evening at Bargah Sevom, located at 4,150m. We enjoy a packed lunch enroute surrounded by incredible mountain vistas. Trek: ~7hrsOvernight: Shelter in Bargah Sevom or tent during summer

Mount Damavand Summit Trek

Today is the day we have been waiting for, summit day. We rise early and set off to make the ascent to the very summit of Mount Damavand at 5,610m. Once we've reached goal at the summit, we'll take time to rest before making our descent back down to the Bragah e Sevom shelter 4,223m. Note: in the event of adverse weather conditions during the ascent or descent of Damavand, we will only take the safer southern route (Rineh and Bargah e Sevom).Trek: ~8hrsOvernight: Shelter at Bragah e Sevom

Trek to Gosfandsara & transfer to Rineh

Today we descend the volcanic scree back down to Gosfandsara at 3,040m. Here we meet back with our vehicle and make the 2hr drive back Rineh at 2,133m. Trek: ~5hrsOvernight: Local house in Rineh

Drive to Tehran, sightseeing

There are many great museums in Tehran, for example the Carpet Museum, which illustrates the history of Iran, its poets and its myths. Note: the Tehran touring will depend on opening days & times of the museums and therefore the order of sights and the sights visited may vary accordingly. Overnight: Marlik Hotel or similar

In Tehran, trip concludes

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. Depending on your flight out today, there may be more time for further optional sightseeing. Please discuss this with your guide.

Additional Information

Steeped in mythology the iconic peak of Mount Damavand has also been peppered into Persian Poetry and literature as a symbol of the resistance to foreign rule. Its majestic volcanic form rises steeply from the Central Alborz mountain range and whilst it is coated in snow during the winter it is an achievable peak for walkers and climbers during the summer season. Following some time to acclimatise in the mountains above Tehran we head to the south side of the mountain. Ascending the peak with good acclimatisation and staying at the climbers hut before our summit push we hope to reach the volcanic rim at sunrise. An easy descent of the volcanic scree is a welcome respite from the rigours of summit day, before returning to Tehran.
