A beautiful, safe, splitboard tour within 2 hours of Zurich with beautiful views, 1300m elevation gain, and makings for an incredible day in the mountains.
The tour is suitable for splitboards, skis, and snowshoes, so if you are a mixed group, this is perfect! The tour begins in the town of Elm at an elevation of 952m in one of Swizerland’s most beautiful valleys, and from here you have beautiful views of Tschingelhörner (UNESCO World Heritage mountain). When the conditions go right, it is an absolute Powder Lock . When conditions are right, snow will go down to the valley floor, which makes for a fun tour. The Swiss know this, and frequent it often, so on a powder days, get there early.
We took the 06:12 from Zurich HB to Elm, station, and arrived at 07:57. The snow was good, so we put on our skins directly at the bus stop! 10 minutes after arrival, we were on the way. From the station, head south and take the first left after the barn going up the street called Untertal. There will be signs for Fanenstock starting here. After about 1.2km, you arrive to the end of the road. Continue up the hill following the hiking trail marked Fanenstock. You will climb through forest, before moving above the tree line, getting beautiful views of the Tschingelhörner and valley below.
Once you reach the peak at 2,235m, take in a deep view, eat your lunch, and soak in the view!! The descent gives you a little bit of everything, starting with an open bowl, a little traverse down to the forest, and amazingly varied terrain through the forest. The sun shines strong in the afternoon, so be sure to start the tour early.
