Experience an Out of This World Ecosystem at Mono Lake South Tufa Area

Where you can float with trillions of brine shrimp in an ancient lake almost three times saltier than the ocean.

By: Susan Allen + Save to a List

A vibrant green body of water is outlined by a chalky, white perimeter alongside the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This sparkling gem in Lee Vining, California is Mono Lake. Limestone tufa tower from the salty water that is teaming with trillions of brine shrimp. Living tornados of alkali flies swarm away from the gulls, grebes and phalaropes that breed and stop over at the lake during migration. While visiting the California state park, I felt like I was on another planet.

Chances are you'll see flies. Fortunately they don't bite.
