Paddle the Edisto River
Walterboro, South Carolina
Description
Added by Meagan Evans
Edisto River is one of the longest free flowing black water rivers in the country. It flows 250 from Saluda county to Edisto Beach.
There are several access points to Edisto River. The easiest to find if you are not a local it to go through the Colleton State Park in Walterboro, SC. A canoe trail between Colleton and Givhans Ferry is 21 miles by river and 15 miles by highway. Seven to nine hours paddling time is required for the full distance depending on current.
The water usually flows between 2 mph and 4 mph. The river twists and turns and trees do fall on the outside bends. Check the water levels before proceeding. Sometimes it gets pretty low and you can hit the bottom and when it is higher, the water flows faster! Going around some of the bends at a slightly higher speed can tip you over!
