Take a sunset cruise on Chapman's Peak Drive

Widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the world, Chapman's Peak Drive is a must-do for anyone visiting Cape Town.

One of the best ways to take in a Cape Town sunset is by taking a late afternoon drive on Chapman's Peak.

The coastal road, carved into a mountain face, connects Hout Bay and Noordhoek, and is a spectacular, winding 9kmdrive.

Beginning from the Hout Bay side, drive through the toll booth and pay the R47 entry fee. Pass the day use turnaround section, where you will be required to show your payment receipt in order to continue.

From here, take your time - the scenery is jaw-dropping, with panoramic views of Hout Bay, the surrounding mountains, and the vast Atlantic Ocean. The road has a total of 114 sharp curves, so it is necessary to drive slowly and cautiously, savouring the spectacular scenery.

There are numerous pullouts where motorists can stop and take in the views, some of which sit almost 600m above the ocean. Look around for whales and dolphins, as they are frequent passers-by in this area.

Stake out a rock or a ledge near one of the pullouts to sit and watch the sun sink into the ocean. And don't forget your camera, because there's a pretty good chance that this will be a sunset that you never forget!
