Climb to ruins of Čachtice Castle: "the mysterious castle in the Carpathian Mountains". This medieval stone castle towers over the town of Čachtice in Western Slovakia and offers breathtaking views of the Slovak landscape.

Castles are abundant in Slovakia, and Čachtice Hrad (Cachtice Castle) is one you don't want to miss. This hike is popular with locals, and will give you an excellent taste of Slovak history, culture, and nature.

Built in the first half of the 13th, Cachtice Castle is famous (and possibly haunted) for being the residence of “bloody countess Elizabeth Bátory”, who allegedly killed 600 young girls bathed in their blood in order to stay forever young and beautiful.

Don't let the castle's history scare you away though, because today, visitors can hike through the Carpathian Mountains to the castle ruins. Standing beneath medieval castle ruins while gazing out at the beautiful Slovak landscape below is an unbeatable experience.

You can access the trail to the top of the castle from the village of Cachtice or the village of Visnove. From Cachtice, park in the village and follow the yellow hiking marks. From Visnove, park in the village and follow the yellow or green hiking marks. The hike takes around 45 minutes one way.

Bring your camera and stop in the charming towns of Cachtice or Visnove for a hot chocolate after the trek!
