5 Activities for the Perfect Costa Rica Beach Trip

The perfect combination of adventure and 'pura vida.'

By: Scott Kaiser + Save to a List

Looking for the perfect balance of laid back vacation with just enough adventure? These five Costa Rican activities will leave you thinking about tearing up your return flight ticket and living the pure life forever.

1. Catamaran cruise

Hop aboard a catamaran, kick your feet up and enjoy the ride. What's better than sunshine on your face, wind in your hair, and a friendly crew to ensure you're never without a pina colada? I can't think of much. When you drop anchor for lunch, spend some time jumping off the boat into the great swimming pool known as the Pacific Ocean. Take turns with fellow passengers on the SUP board or grab a snorkel and search for sea critters. As you watch the sunset over the ocean on the return trip, be sure to be last off the boat to soak it all in.

2. ATV touring

You'll want to wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy, dusty or both on this adventure. We selected the "beach" excursion options. We met our guides just outside of town and cruised the backroads towards the beach on an ATV. After a quick pit stop at a small homestead, we made our way to our second beach. A short break at this beach provided some time to slip on a snorkel and swim along some rocks. On the way back, we had a long stretch of beach to lay down the gas and hit speeds of 60kph (40mph). Don't shy away from the mud puddles on the way back and this is a ride you'll be smiling about for weeks after.

3. Zip line

What's Costa Rica without a zip line? Each zip line experience will be different but there isn't a better way to experience the rainforests from up in the canopy. If you're feeling extra adventurous, go upside down.

4. Kayaking

Back on the water, kayaking is the best way to explore areas you otherwise can't access (crocodiles, anyone?). Great for bird watching and if you're lucky you'll spot monkeys in the trees above. Just watch out for the sand bar on the way back during low tide--the last thing you want to do is get out of your boat where the crocodiles lie.

5. Soaking in the sunsets

End each day taking in the breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. Pura vida.
