See the beauty of Mt. Tam with this easy 4.3-mile loop with mild elevation change and beautiful forest views.

Mt. Tam is a great destination for anyone looking to get out of the city and explore some of the Bay Area's beautiful forest. Starting at the Pantoll Parking Pull-Off hikers are instantly transported into what I can only refer to as an enchanted forest. Even on a chilly, rainy, foggy day the views are incredible while you progress through tree covered trail.

There are plenty of route options in / on / around Mt. Tam but the basic route we took to hit 4.3 miles and get to scope out the West Point Inn was Old Mine Trail > (turn right) Riding and Hiking Trail > (bear left) Easy Grade Trail > (head right) Rock Spring Trail > (turn right) Old Stage Road. We followed the directions from this site but it is a bit outdated so I highly recommend printing out a map from caltopo.com or Google Maps. There is plenty to see on this hike and you even get to explore the no longer used outdoor theater. It was a dreary day when we went out, but we were literally alone in the wilderness and it was fantastic! We saw no other hikers and only two cars on Old Stage Road. We even came across a doe and a buck sneaking around behind us on the trail.
