Expansive, beautiful beach IN the city. Dunes carved with small foot trails. Take your dog to the beach and let him or her run free (off-leash!). Abundant sand dollar findings! There are several short trails for you guys to get a run in. Duration: Depends on where your feet take you.

Fort Funston is an SF gem I discovered when looking for a dog friendly hike near the city. Located west of Lake Merced, you'll find a gorgeous Northern California beach oasis where you and your dog can run wild and free :). Parking is located at the top of the park where you'll descend a steep set of stairs to the beach. Lots of small trails carved into the hillside to explore, as well was vast sandy flats to meander and stroll. Sunset is usually a less busy time here - plus you get some spectacular views!

If you're planning on staying out at the beach for a while, swing by BART Grocery & BBQ and grab a plate of Korean BBQ to take with you.

Fort Funston Trail Reviews

If you are a dog person this is the place to go. If you’re just out for a hike or stroll, you’ll still have a good time and see lots of doggies. If you’re up to it take the sand ladder down to the beach but remember you’ll have to hike back up it. Or you can hike along the beach and take the more gradual Funston Beach Trail just south of the great highway. Expect winds here as this is popular hang-gliding location.

Such a dog friendly place! So many dogs for your pup to play with, plenty of trails and ocean for your dog to play in. My dogs LOVE it here.

Lots of terrain - everything from paved walkways, to grass, to sand/surf.
