Description

Wrap your arms around one of few forests of giant redwoods. Take time to drop by and visit the home of a hermit. Listen to the wildlife around you as you are here to relax. Hendy Woods State Park is an easy walk through the woods, a good time to reflect--and don't forget to look up.

Hendy Woods State Park may not have the largest acreage of redwood, but it does have the biggest redwoods I have seen. The state park is close to Philo and Boonville, CA. Hendy Woods also has camping and a river close by for fishing and swimming. And of course hiking or a nice stroll through the woods. Expect to pay a day fee for the park. For more details about the Hendy Woods State park, check out their website: Hendy Woods State Park

Hendy Woods has the option of some easy loops and also a longer trail that starts at the campground. The loops are recommended as I suggest you take your time walking among the giants. Don't forget to look up as these giants stand very tall. As you walk through the forest you don't gain any elevation as you are mainly walking the forest floor.

I highly suggest leaving the giants to visit a friendly hermit. This Hendy Hermit is no longer with us but his homes still stand. Near one of his homes the Hendy Woods State Park someone left some information about the Hendy Hermit. A sad and also heartfelt story of how Petrov Zailenko came to these woods and his relationship to the people who lived near the woods. Zailenko passed in 1981, but his home stands strong.

Hendy Woods has a great mix of giant redwoods, a river, a hermit, a big open field and other wonderful places to explore. I came upon Hendy Woods by accident as I was heading back to the 101 from the coast, but I am happy I did.
