The geological features of Sunny Cove funnel incoming swells to create large, barreling waves reminiscent of the famous Newport “Wedge.” I have once heard the beach and its locals described as “Very Santa Cruuuuz, Braj” (accompanied by a mellow shacka hand, of course). Although narrow, the beach area extends far back from the shore and is popular with dog owners and young locals. Come nightfall, the beach is also a good spot to pitch a bonfire with some friends.

To get down to the beach you will have to navigate some rocky stairs that can be difficult for handicapped and elderly people.

At high tide, there are various places for cliff jumping up to about 15 feet high. Although it is illegal, some locals go fishing from the private cliffs just north of the cove. The cliffs on the south side of the cove offer some romantic and secluded lookout points on the way to the larger Twin Lakes beach.

The true attraction of Sunny Cove, however, is the unique swell often created by the rocky outcropping at the opening of the cove. With a boogie board it is possible to ride large waves to the beach and spend some quality time in the green room.
