Camp at New Camp and Explore the Salton Sea

Mecca, California

Description

Added by Jessica Linderman

This is a nice developed campground just minutes walking distance to the Salton Sea.  Enjoy spacious campsites, beautiful sunsets over the lake, and sweeping views of the Milky Way at night.

Each campsite at New Camp has a smooth, flat bottom and comes equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Most have shaded structures as well.  Bathrooms and showers are tiled, modern and clean.  There’s a nature trail next to the campground and the Salton Sea is about 3 minutes walking distance away.  On a clear night, the Milky Way comes out in full force.

Mostly void of humans and with beaches made of crushed fish bones and sea shells, the Salton Sea is an eerie, tranquil and desolate scene.  The Sea is great for exploring wildlife- particularly the avian biodiversity- and for interesting photography.

Off season (June-Sept) is a good time to visit if you’re looking for isolation; camping reservations aren’t available nor are they necessary.  Expect limited visitors and a nearly empty campground.  However temperatures can get up to 115 degrees during the day so plan and pack appropriately.  Also, bugs can be pretty bothersome at night so bring bug spray.

On Season (Oct- May) is the best (temperature-wise) and also busiest time to visit.  Reservations are available.

Some activities include kayaking, swimming, boating, fishing and picnicking.  Note: the "sand" on the beach is a mix of sea shells and crushed fish bones, which can be uncomfortable walking on with just sandals (the pieces can be sharp and get stuck in between your toes). Best to wear closed toe shoes.

Notable sites nearby are Bombay Beach, Slab City and Salvation Mountain - all within a 20-45 minute drive.
