General Luna, Philippines

Surf General Luna

Originally added by Aaron Hagen

Widely known as in the Philippines as the best surfing for the locals, not well known yet by expats. Perfect waves for all levels from just starting out to professionals, they have it all on this small paradise-esque island.

Located on the island of Siargao in the Philippines on the eastern side resides the chilled out surfer island of General Luna. Friendly locals, great food, dirt cheap prices, and some of the best surfing in all of SouthEast Asia!

Cloud 9 would be the most famous of any of the surf spots, this is located centrally and draws in the largest crowds by far. Here you can find primarily beginner to intermediate waves depending on the weather and time of year. There will be an influx of veteran Filipino local surfers who will be there everyday offering pointers and giving you a helpful hand, don't underestimate the knowledge or generosity of these guys they're awesome!

a typical day on this little island involves waking up before dawn, grabbing your surfboard and heading out to one of the many surf spots to catch the sunrise waves at their best. Then you motorbike around the island, grab some delicious Filipino food, typically some yoga (it's everywhere on this island). Eventually it's back to a surf spot with your board in hand for some rad sunset surfing until it's so dark that you truly can't see what's in front of you, and some good ol' fashioned celebrations follow the surfing and then it's a repeat the next day. Eat, sleep, surf, repeat in Siargao.

Beginner Surfers

The locals all over the popular beaches will rent you a board of their own or know exactly where to get a board for cheap, about $5-$10 for 24hrs for a decent board. If this option doesn't work there are plenty of surf shops around Cloud 9 that rent out boards.

The two best surf spots for beginners include Cloud 9 and Graveyard (ask around about this one, the people at Cloud 9 will know what you mean).

The locals at these two spots will be lining up to give you lessons for a small fee, they'll give you directions and pointers, take you out to the best spots, even launch you down the waves to give you more speed. Again, the locals here are awesome and you should make it a point to meet them.
