The most impressive waterfall of Ohiopyle State Park, Cucumber Falls stands at 30 feet high running into the Youghiogheny River, more commonly known as the "Yawk." With free access to every inch of the falls and a short hike leading out into a beautiful river view, this exploration is an exquisite experience.

Just off Kentuck Road, at the southern end of Ohiopyle State Park, you arrive at Cucumber Falls' marked parking lot. Access to this lot is limited (about 20 cars). Most of the time you will be able to find a spot, but when not, parking on the side of the road is perfectly acceptable.

Walking down to the entry point of any natural structure is exhilarating, especially here. The first thing you'll see is a bridge overlooking the top of the falls, a spot where you anticipate the excitement of the adventure set before you. From there, the path lead to an overlook with a long stairway entering down into the realm of the rocks surrounding the falls. In an effort to capture the essence of a scenic view, photographers will definitely want to make use of this spot.

Marching down the steps to the foot of the falls is not difficult in the warmer months of spring and summer, but in colder months be extremely cautious, because it does tend to get icy. The path features hand rails for safety.

After hiking down the few dozen steps and ramps to the foot of the falls, there's a moment that runs through me each time, one where you feel as though you're in a fairytale. In addition to the 30-foot Cucumber Falls looking out over all its visitors, the site is home to hundreds of rock structures laying in the midst of a flowing stream. Everywhere, mini waterfalls accompany their predecessor. Walk under the falls, on both sides of the falls, and on top of the falls, experiences that cannot be described in words.

Continuing on the short trail extending from the steps, we could make out a clear blue sky, one that hung over the rushing waters of the Yawk. This is a spot where you can rest and soak it all in. If you make this a weekend exploration, you will have no problem witnessing the whitewater rafters, kayakers, and fishermen; a perfectly set scene for anyone who loves the outdoors.
