A quick half hour hike through a temperate rainforest leads to an epic 200 foot waterfall.
Hike a little under a mile up a pleasant, well-maintained dirt trail to Elowah Falls. The hike is densely covered and provides ample shade from the heat. This trail provides a huge payoff for a little bit of sweat in the form of a massive waterfall for epic photo opportunities. Prepare to get wet as your approach the waterfall as the mist is powerful.
How to get there:
Park at the John B. Yeon Trailhead. From Portland, head down I-84 east, exit 35. Stay on the feeder following sings to Dodson and then John B. Yeon State Park.
Coming from the east, head west of I-84, exit 37, take a left under the freeway, and drive 1/4 mile until you reach the state park.
Park on the side of the road behind the other cars likely there or brave cutting in front and scoring parking in the lot at the start of the trail.
Note: The trail and trailhead does not have bathrooms.
Note 2: The trail is currently closed due to a washout, pictured above. You can still access the trail by walking down the biking path passed the trailhead, and then hike up the Gorge Trail back up and east into the mountain. But you'll have to go back the same way to your car if the trail is closed.
