Description

Added by Jamie Fleck

Panoramic aerial views of the extraordinary Wichita Mountains and various lakes. Photographer's bliss during all times of the day, especially at sunset. One of a kind scenery in Oklahoma. Rock scrambling on the granite crags at the top. Abundance of wildlife. Variety in ways of access to mountaintop (driving, hiking, bicycling, rock climbing). Easy, accessible parking.

Nestled on the east side of the picturesque Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge is the magnificent Mount Scott, rising 2,464 feet above sea level. One of the most famous granite rock peaks in Oklahoma, Mount Scott offers panoramic views of the Wichita Mountains to the west, the wind turbines of the Blue Canyon Wind Farm to the north, and Lake Lawtonka and the historic town of Medicine Park to the east. The best time to enjoy the scenery at Mount Scott is at sunset, as you watch the sun coming down behind Haley Peak and Elk Mountain for a mesmerizing scene and an array of colors. There are several lookouts on Mount Scott, as well as an abundance of beautiful wildlife that make a presence.

Mount Scott is accessible to the top via automobile, hiking (along the road), biking, or rock scrambling (two climbing areas are accessible from the road). After heading west on highway 49 from Interstate 44 for 6.7 miles, there will be a road up Mount Scott on your right. This road winds around Mount Scott for over 3 miles until you reach the top and maximum driving speed is 25 mph. There is parking available on both the west and east sides of the mountain. The road from highway 49 going up Mount Scott is gated, and its opening hours are 9 a.m. until sunset or 8 p.m. whichever is later (especially during the summer when we went).

For an extraordinary view that you can’t really get anywhere else in Oklahoma, the top of Mount Scott is just the place to be.

Great place to take pictures

Often overlooked outing in Oklahoma. Great view for a sunset!

Easy drive to the top of Mount Scott with ample parking. Here you'll fine one of the best views in Oklahoma where you can look out and see the Wichita Mountains, Lake Lawtonka, and numerous wind farms, as well as the city of Lawton. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
