Description

Added by Elyse Clark

Hike around the base of one of the most unique and distinctive mountains in the area. Visitors may recognize Pilot Mountain due to it's periodic mentioning in the Andy Griffith show (they call it Mt. Pilot though).

This unique peak, also known as the Big Pinnacle, is in Pilot Mountain State Park.  From the main parking area on top of the mountain on Pilot Knob Park Road, you can first view the Big Pinnacle from the overlook attached to the parking lot.  The prominent mountain behind the Big Pinnacle is Hanging Rock

Walk towards the bathrooms and on your right side will be the trailhead for the Jomeokee Trail. This short and easy 0.8 loop enables you to encircle the base of Big Pinnacle, offering views of the large quartzite cliffs that encompass the peak.

It doesn't matter which way you encircle the Big Pinnacle, as it goes in a loop and will re-intersect the trail on which you walked in on.

**Due to high volume/visitation, the state park urges that visitors arrive early or visit during the week due to limited parking that fills up quickly.

Hike the Jomeokee Trail at Pilot Mountain SP Reviews

This is a really cool spot for a quick day hike. We hiked around Pilot Mountain for a few hours. The Jomeokee Trail has some really nice overlooks and great views of the impressive cliffs. We passed a few rock climbers, and also enjoyed watching hawks riding the wind above the cliff tops. Climbing and camping are available within the state park with permits.

This trail is less crowded than the Mountain and Ledge Spring trails, and it's more rewarding. Better views and things to see, fewer people! A beautiful, under 2-hour hike less than 45 minutes from Winston-Salem.
