Hike to Kitekite Falls

Added by Murielle Baker

Duration: 1-2 hours. 1.8km (1.1mile) easy track to the falls (3.6km roundtrip). Climb the waterfall for a private pool. Views into the valley. Lush green forest. Close to Piha Beach.

A visit to Auckland's west coast isn't complete until you've had a swim at Kitekite Falls.

An easy 40-minute drive from Auckland city, the walk to Kitekite Falls (pronounced key-teh key-teh) is at the end of Glen Esk Road. There's plenty of space to park your car before you meander to the Falls.

It's an easy track that'll take less than an hour if you're fit. You can swim at the bottom of the Falls, though the rocks are a bit sharp. It's deep enough to put your head under as you swim out (make sure you paddle through the Falls for a refreshing shower!).

On a busy day there could be other people there enjoying the same thing, so if you want a more secluded swim with a view into the valley, cross the stream and follow the track on the other side to the top of the Falls. Test your nerve by swimming to the edge of one of the pools and looking over the face of the Falls to the bigger pool below!

The track to this beautiful spot is short and easy. Make sure you bring a towel and a spare change of clothes. When you're done, check out Piha village and its beautiful black-sand beaches (south and north Piha) and grab a coffee or lunch before you head back to the city.

A perfect waterfall hike

This hike is easy but oh so rewarding! A beautiful waterfall and perfect swimming hole for the hot summer days. I haven't hiked to the top of the waterfall yet but plan to do so next time :)
