Hike Mount Arthur and the Tablelands
Motueka Valley, New Zealand
Description
Added by Vincent Frascello
Distance: 28 km round trip. Beautiful, unique scenery with rolling green hills. Dark skies suitable for stargazing and astrophotography. Challenge hikes through grasslands, beech forests, tussock and mountains. Backcountry huts and tent camping.
Mount Arthur and the Tablelands are a unique and beautiful portion of Kahurangi National Park. The area is remote, making it perfect for astrophotography.
There are many hiking options and places to stay - consult the map at the Flora Car Park shelter for options. Here is a short circuit that can be completed in 2-3 days:
Day One Hike from Flora Car Park to Mount Arthur Hut or Flora Hut. 200 meters past the hut, the beech forest clears - a great place for the sunrise and astrophotography. Both of these huts are $5/night. Mount Arthur Hut has a rainwater system and Flora Hut has a river stream.
Day Two Hike from Mount Arthur Hut up Mount Arthur, across Gordons Pyramid to Salisbury Lodge. The lodge has 22 bunks, gas range with fuel, drinkable water, and costs $15/night.
Day Three Hike out on Salisbury Track. You can stay at Flora Hut or go back to Mount Arthur, if you want to stay another night.
Note that all the huts have mice in them, so hang food from the rafters!
Getting there: Drive to the end of Graham Valley Road to the Flora Car Park. This is a very steep road, accessible with 4WD only in wet or winter conditions. Particularly hot weather, alternatively, can cause your vehicle to overheat.
