When we think of National Parks usually Yosemite, Yellowstone, Denali come to mind. However, this historic national park is amazing in its own right. It is scenic, educational and so rich in history!

From the parking area walk up to the Visitors Center.  The hike begins at the back of the Visitors Center.  There is a  kiosk that marks the start of the trail.  There are many stations with points of interest along the way .  At 0.8 miles you begin the loop part of the trail.  You will cross the Auto Tour Road several times during your hike.

Midway through the hike you will descend into the Great Ravine.  At  the bottom of the ravine you cross a stream on a bridge.  Then ascend out of the ravine, which is an elevation gain of about 120 feet.  At 3.5 miles you finish the loop section and gradually ascend back to the trailhead.

If you have not already, be sure to stop in at the Visitors Center.

I also suggest taking the 10 mile Auto Tour Road.  It has ten wayside interpretive stops.
