Hike Balanced Rocks on Pitchoff Mountain

New York Balanced Rock Trail

Added by Rebecca Nichols

Also known as Balanced Rocks, the summit is like a playground with beautiful views of the high peaks!

The parking for this hike is shared with the parking for the high peak Cascade Mountain. The trailhead is separate and begins just across the street.

About twenty minutes into your climb you will ascend a somewhat steep pitch which will offer a small lookout to Cascade Mountain. A bit further up you will reach a larger lookout which will also allow you views of both Cascade Lakes. Looking at Cascade Mountain, note the number seven shaped slide. This is also a fun yet technical way up that mountain and should be done by an advanced climber.

Continuing on you will eventually reach a junction which will direct you to either continue to Pitchoff's true summit or to views, on the right. You will turn right and the last 0.1 mile will bring you to the massive open area known as Balanced Rocks.

You will have amazing views of Colden, Algonquin and Marcy. Don't forget to take your picture with the two over-sized balanced rocks.

How to Get There

I would also advise exploring past the rocks. There is a massive rock overhang and a cool slot between the rocks that you can enter and climb up.

I hike to push my limits both mentally and physically, take in the beauty of the great outdoors, and just to get away from it all. Every chance I get you will find me in the mountains, on a kayak or ending my day by the campfire!

Hike the North Point Loop

New York / Butter Hill Trailhead

There is three different trailheads to access the North Point Loop.  I chose the trailhead that would give me the longest hike.  That would be the Butter Hill parking area on Route 9W north.

This loop is a great option to avoid crowds on the west side of the Washburn trail.  Start at the same trailhead for the Washburn Trail.
