"Letchworth State Park, renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs as high as 600 feet in some places and is surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. This scenic hike along the top of the gorge will let you see it all. Start the hike by parking at the Lower Falls designated parking lot. From this lot check in with the small gift shop to grab a park map. After getting a park map you will follow the signs to “The Gorge Trail” trailhead. From the trailhead it is a 7 mile one way hike all the way up to Upper Falls. If doing the full hike it is recommended that you leave a vehicle parked near Upper Falls so you don’t have to walk another 7 miles back. From the start of the trail you will quickly find Lower Falls. Explore this area and find the awesome bridge that crosses the gorge. From Lower Falls hike a couple miles to Inspiration Point. Here you will be welcomed by an amazing overlook with a view of both Middle and Upper Falls from 500 feet above the river. A perfect spot to have lunch and take a few photos. Leaving Inspiration Point hike to Middle Falls, the largest of the three waterfalls. After taking in the size of Middle Falls finish out the last bit of the hike by continuing to Upper Falls and the Train Viaduct.

Once the hike is finished and you got back in your car whether it be hiking all the way back or hitching a ride it is important to check out a few more spots in this park. Stop and see Big Bend Overlook, Gardeau Overlook and, Mount Morris Dam Overlook to finish off the day.

If limited in time or hiking isn’t your thing you can drive to each of the places. Parking is available at each waterfall and scenic overlook.

Check with the park office if hiking during the winter as some parts of the Gorge Trail may be closed for the season.
