Hither Hills State Park
Montauk, New York
Description
Added by Jerry Meagher
Great campsite on the ocean in Montauk. Reservations very hard to get in high season.
A beach front campground. The park itself is very large; there are many hiking trails North of the campground that allow access to the other side of the Southfork and Nepeague Bay.

Climb the Bluffs of Shadmoor State Park
I've never actually been into the Shadmoor State Park, but you can climb up and onto the bluffs from the beach easily; well kind of easily. Most of the parking lots along the beach require Hamptons residency tags, so you can't park right next to beach entrances... bummer. We typically park along Surfside Ave. near the beach access. From there you can easily walk along the water till you get to...
Stroll along the Montauk Point Lighthouse Cliff Walk
The Montauk Point Lighthouse is one of the main attractions of "The End" of Long Island, but I've only ever walked around it on the cliff walk. When you get to the lighthouse, you can park in the parking lot (depending on when you go there may be a $8 fee). Right along the edge overlooking the water are a couple of swing benches to sit and enjoy the view before or after your walk, or even both!...
Hike through the Mashomack Nature Preserve
Just a short ferry ride from the Hamptons, South Ferry Road is exactly where it sounds; very close to the South Ferry of Shelter Island. The parking lot of Mashomack Preserve is marked by a large sign. When you walk in, you'll see a large nature center. Sign in at a clipboard at the table out front. The suggested donation is $2 for children and $3 for adults, but please leave more if you can (W...
Paddle Peconic Bay
While there are many ways to access the Peconic Bay, I have found the best direction to explore is north west after launching and during the sunset. If you head to the public beach on Towd Point Rd. you can launch from there and make your way out toward Robins Island. Like most places the water is calmest while the sun is setting and gets to be so calm that is looks like a sheet of glass. The c...
Visit Avery Point Lighthouse
Owned by the University of Connecticut this lighthouse is a short walk from the parking area. Though the grounds are open the tower is not. Avery Point offers panoramic ocean views.
From this location you can also see New London Harbor Lighthouse & New London Ledge Light.
You can also see the amazing Branford House Mansion.
Hike Haley Farm Loop
Haley Farm Loop is a 2.7 mile loop hike that takes you past wildlife located near Groton, Connecticut.
