With incredible scenery in this remote part of Montana there is very low activity in winter. You will see the Stillwater River and experience a beautiful drive through Fishtail and Nye.
This is a great spot for a winter snowshoe or hike, depending on the weather. The Stillwater river may be frozen with incredible colors and the mountain views are awesome. When we hiked there on New Year's day there wasn't enough snow to snowshoe on so we hiked in boots instead. This is a very popular trail in the summer because of the campground where the trailhead is located, but winter is entirely the opposite. We did not see anyone else the whole time we were there.
The hike is only 3/4 miles to the Woodbine Falls Overlook with an elevation gain of about 300 feet. The total hike is 1.5 miles round trip. It is listed here as intermediate only because of the winter ice/snow conditions that may exist. This is grizzly country so if you go when the bears are not hibernating, have bear spray readily accessible. In summer this is an easy to moderate hike. This area is about an hour from Red Lodge.
The trailhead is 8 miles past the town of Nye at the end of the road where the campground is located. The road is paved all the way to the trailhead and kept in good condition during winter because of the active mine at the end of road. Buses travel up and down the road carrying workers to and from the mine. It would still be a good idea to check with Beartooth Ranger District about the road conditions in winter. When you reach the campground, the trailhead it at the back of the campground. The large trailhead sign is in the photos above. After your hike, about the only place nearby to grab food and beverages is Carter's Camp. The beer is great, the food is okay and it is definitely a local joint. I think that the locals prefer it that way so keep that in mind and be considerate of their very, very small town.
