Blodgett Canyon Overlook
Montana › Blodgett Overlook Trailhead/Canyon Creek Trailhead
Added by Meredith Baird
This is a stunning hike with views of Blodgett Canyon, the Bitterroot Valley, and the Sapphire Mountains.
The drive up forest service road 735 can be a little sketchy. Caution is advised during winter months or if the road is wet or muddy. The road dead ends at the Canyon Creek/Blodgett Overlook trailhead. There is ample parking space and an outhouse.
Begin on the Canyon Creek trail and hang a right at the sign to stay on Blodgett Overlook trail 101. From there, the trail gradually ascends with switchbacks above the parking area. The trail continues to switchback through Ponderosa forest with great views of the Bitterroot Valley and in the distance, the Sapphire Mountains. Along the way, there are a few benches strategically placed for enjoying the magnificent views. At 1.5 miles, you have reached your destination and you will know it! The scene is breathtaking! Be careful here, there are benches and well traveled paths, but the ledges are steep and rocky.
Snap some photos, breathe in the fresh air, and have a snack. When you are done, head back the way you came.
- Hiking shoes

Great hike when you're short on time
Always a favorite standby hike! Really clears the mind just to be on the trail, with all your senses stimulated by nature. My favorite time is a warm summer evening, to sit at the top and watch the birds riding the thermals through the canyon below.

Planning & Preparations As amazing as this trek is, it's certainly not without its challenges, and the first one you will run into is obtaining a backcountry permit for camping.
