Red Rocks Amphitheatre – How To Use It To It’s Full Potential

If you’re lucky enough to live in the vicinity of Morrison, CO, or you’re thinking of taking a trip to the front range of the Rockies, then Red Rocks Amphitheatre should be high up on your mental list of places to visit.

By: Mollie Carberry + Save to a List

The naturally formed amphitheatre has been used for concerts since 1906, with the venue as it appears today being designed by Denver architect Burnham Hoyt. Nestled amongst the distinctive red rocks of the front range, the venue is truly a sight to behold. There are many ways that you can utilise Red Rocks to its full potential all year round.

1.     Attend a concert

The most obvious function of Red Rocks Amphitheatre is as a concert venue, with countless bands and singers gracing the stage for over a hundred years. Many artists have used the striking venue in videos and documentaries, from John Denver to U2 to Fleetwood Mac. Attending a concert at Red Rocks is a truly unique experience, with the incredible acoustics and panoramic views of Denver and the glistening night sky.

2.     Explore some other events

To limit Red Rocks to a mere concert venue would be doing it a disservice. Many events are held at Red Rocks every year, from Film on the Rocks to Yoga and Fitness on the Rocks. The venue doubles up as an open-air cinema, a gym and even a wedding venue, along with much more.

3.     Go for a workout

If you visit on a dry day, especially at a weekend, you are guaranteed to be in good company, surrounded by countless people in workout gear armed with water bottles and ipods. Red Rocks is a fantastic place to exercise should you fancy a change from the gym. The 69 rows of seats equate to three miles of running when covered from top to bottom, and the deep steps and planters are ideal for plyo jumps, lunges, dips, or any other exercise your imagination can create.

4.     Go for a hike or bike ride

Situated in a Denver Mountain Park, Red Rocks is surrounded by trails perfect for a leisurely hike or bike ride through stunning rock formations and rolling meadows. The Trading Post trial, Geologic Overlook trial and Red Rocks trial are all beautiful, with amazing views of the surrounding scenery. Dinosaur Ridge can also be found nearby, an easy ridge walk complete with dinosaur fossils and footprints for the budding palaeontologist.

5.     Or just go to take in the views

If none of the other options tempt you but you find yourself with a free few hours, head to Red Rocks to simply sit and take in the surroundings. It is the perfect place to chill on a sunny day with a drink and a book, or to go and catch up with friends on the seats. Red Rocks is also often rife with dog-walkers making the most of the handy location and fresh air, so it also makes the ideal place to bring your canine friends along.
