We went up via Glen Aulin TH with the intention of coming back via Dog Lake for an overnight trip. The hike in was a little rough in the middle of the day (mostly exposed), but not super steep at any point. We got to the first lake and there were a bunch of people already camped around the lake, so even though we were exhausted, we decided to continue hiking up to the upper lake to camp for one night. Well worth it!! Even on a busy Saturday night in August, there were only 2 other solo backpackers sleeping at this lake. Absolutely stunning sunset and beautiful sunrise. My partner and I went with his dad, who had never backpacked before. It was not an easy trip for him, but definitely doable for first-timers. There was no other water other than what was at the lakes, so if you are going any later than early August, be sure to hike with enough water both ways!

My first solo trip, at the end of September. I drove out to Yosemite on a Thursday evening, camped just outside of the park that night, and then on Friday morning at 8am I went to get a (free) wilderness permit for Ten Lakes- there were plenty of permits left. I originally planned to do a thru-hike but when I got into Ten Lakes basin, I knew I wasn't going to leave the second night. I had an entire lake to myself, and spent all of the next day exploring the other lakes in the basin. There are some absolutely spectacular campsites at these lakes- just walk around the perimeter of them and you will find so many! On my way out, I stopped at Grant Lakes...unreal!! I was the only one there and felt like I was in a magical and enchanted fairy tale. So peaceful. I was amazed how easy it was to get here and feel so far away from it all for a couple of days. Highly, highly recommend and plan on doing it again next year.

We arrived at Echo Lakes trailhead a bit late in the day, so ended up stopping and camping at Lake Tamarack the first night, about 4 miles in. We went up to Lake Aloha for the second night-- absolutely stunning! However it was not easy to find solitude around here (main reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5). A very popular trailhead and lake, for obvious reasons. The early morning at Lake Aloha was the best part- day hikers and dogs were gone and the only people we saw/heard were far across the lake. It was my friend's first backpacking trip and I think it was a great first trip for her- elevation gain was not bad at all, and the scenery was just spectacular. We went in early August- the day was warm and sunny, but the evenings and mornings were cold and windy!! Can be done as a day hike, but worth staying and experiencing the calm if you can!
