The road to Hana was an experience. We bought a $15 CD at the gas station to give us a "play by play" along the way - totally worth it. The ride itself is somewhat unnerving if you're not the one driving with tight turns, often one lane, and close to the cliff edge. Otherwise, very scenic passing local spots, waterfalls, and even guys jumping out of the forest with some "Maui Wowie." The stops along the way as mentioned in the review are worth it - especially the lava tubes and state park at the end. Otherwise, Hana itself can be disappointing (but maybe because there's all this buildup all day driving to it).

I did the road to Hana early, then kept driving up to the park. I was ready to stretch some legs, and this trail did the trick. It's easy, stunning through the bamboo forest, and the Waimoku Falls is a beautiful waterfall (better than those you see on the road to Hana by far)! I did go under the waterfall (not exactly the smartest decision) very briefly for a dip. This hike can be quite muddy so make sure to bring proper footwear.

Not a strenuous trail by any means, but worth a quick trip for the beautiful beach lined coast over looking downtown Honolulu on a sunny day. Go early to avoid the crowds (very touristy), and don't wear slippers people! There's gravel and a few stairs.

I know that's a strong statement (and I'm decently traveled), but it's another feeling driving through various vegetation to reach the park, making the drive up, then watching the sunset above the clouds; it feels as though you're on another planet. It's so peaceful and beautiful, and it was one of the only times I felt a strong presence of a higher power as well. The air is thin, so I do recommend acclimating half way up at the visitor's center and changing into warmer clothes if coming off the beach like I did. Other tip that helped me was having some seltzer and crackers to keep my stomach calm during the sunset. I may be a Hawaii native, but this place is a must experience once in your life!
