I went five days ago and the gate was closed. It took me an hour and a half to get to the trailhead from the gate. 6 hours round-trip including the time at the pool. I'd probably consider my pace faster than the average hiker. Anyway, it was beautiful, especially with all the snow! We only ran into two other couples so it felt private and secluded. Definitely worth the time and effort if you're up for it.

There's a sign that says "don't hike past this point, don't climb on rocks, don't go in the water". To get to the cave, you need to ignore all of these instructions and keep climbing to what appears to be the top. My husband and I assumed this must not have been the right waterfall and then kept hiking up looking for another until we saw from above that this was the right one after all. Easier to figure out once the rush came in, so keep this in mind for your first time and if you're alone.

Like many have said, the way there is straight uphill. There's a nice river that runs along the trail at the beginning and you can often find moose hanging around. I'm 24 and consider myself fit, and it was tougher than I was expecting. It took me an hour and a half to get up. Also, have the expectation that the lake is more of a pond. Pictures make it look bigger than it is. But still very pretty and nice to post up and enjoy the views from the top for a while. I went last week and the changing leaves were beautiful.
