Free parking, stunning views, and miles of trails.

Most Angelenos venture north to do their hiking (as well they should). Nonetheless, we were lucky enough to stumble onto the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve, which offers miles of hiking trails on the bluffs above the ocean just south of the Los Angeles suburbs.

Park at Del Cerro park or along the last stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard and walk to the very end of the Boulevard. A dirt road leads down into the valleys below million-dollar homes. I counted at least a dozen different marked trails of varying degrees of steepness that stemmed and webbed across the bluffs. I believe you can walk all the way down to the ocean, but I wasn't ready for the climb back up.

This is a perfect picnic area, or just a way to clock a few miles without driving too far from urbanity. It is also dog-friendly - there are even plastic bags at the park.
