Exploring Malibu's Point Dume

Malibu, California

Description

Added by Brock DeHaven

Distance: 0.4 miles roundtripExpansive views of the pacific coastline from Malibu to Santa MonicaExcellent rock climbing opportunitiesPopular whale and dolphin watching site

You can start exploring Point Dume from either walking from Zuma beach (my favorite beach in Malibu) or by driving directly to the parking lot that sits below the point. From either direction you will head to the left of the face of the rock that looks north through a gate. The path will begin gradually uphill and then eventually steepen momentarily until you arrive at the top. The entire hike is .2 miles one way, and from the top, head as close or as far from the cliffs edge in order to gain your desired view.

The most popular time for whales to pass through the area is December-April, whereas dolphins are seen year-round.

If you are there to rock climb, there are several moderate pitched routes that are usually climbed on top rope from established fixed anchors. At the bottom of the Point, to the right, you can climb over the rocks to get to a secret cove where you will most likely have the beach to yourself.
