The Floating Island & Cathedral Lakes Trail is a 4.7 mile hike in El Dorado National Forest, just outside of South Lake Tahoe. This is a great hike for all skill levels, featuring a scenic lake and amazing view of Lake Tahoe and Fallen Leaf Lake.

The trail can be crowded on weekends - arrive early to ensure that parking is a breeze. This is a great trail from spring through fall - watch for snow and ice patches. The trail is relatively paved with river rocks and is easy to follow. In the spring, make sure to wear waterproof boots as you will have to cross over several small waterfalls and snowmelt creeks. In the fall, the foliage is amazing. Year-round, the alpenglow at sunset is sure to take your breath away. Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be kept on leash. Watch for bears and other large mammals.

Hike Mount Tallac

South Lake Tahoe, California

The classic 9½ mile out-and-back day hike to Mount Tallac begins at the trailhead on the southwestern side of Lake Tahoe, between Emerald Bay and Camp Richardson.

Photograph the Milky Way over Fallen Leaf Lake

South Lake Tahoe, California

Fallen Leaf has been my favorite spot in all of Tahoe since I can remember. The beautiful shoreline sits right up against the base of Mt. Tallac with almost zero light pollution.

Photograph Fallen Leaf Lake's Cascading Falls

South Lake Tahoe, California

This amazing waterfall is right off the road near the Fallen Leaf Campground. Once you enter the campground keep driving straight just a bit further and you will see a pull off on the right hand side.
