A 2 hour drive from South Lake Tahoe this is a unique state park along highway 4 that is easy to locate and access.
Calaveras Big Trees State Park is a great place to spend a day in the Sierra mountains. The trails are clearly marked and easy to moderate. From the main parking lot you can explore the North Grove which has numbered points of interest that you can read more about by purchasing a trail guide at the trail head. Take an easy stroll to the Grove Overlook trail to catch some breathtaking views of the Sierra Mountains. From the overlook you can continue down the much more strenuous River Canyon Trail. If you're not up for a strenuous hike you can walk back to the visitor's center and hop in the car and drive down the picnic area to relax by the river. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather and make sure roads are open. This park is at a higher elevation and surrounding highways tend to get snow into late Spring and early Fall.
