Climb, Chill, Walk, Run - Allenbrook

This is kind of a hidden gem for first-daters, climbers, mid-day contemplators, and someone looking for a super light hike or quick trail run.

You’re going to be really surprised you’re still in Roswell, or in the Atlanta area at all. When you get out of your car and start walking down the wooden stairs at the start of the trail, the busy sounds of the rushing cars on Atlanta Street fade away into the wind flowing through the Tulip Poplar trees. You look up, and there’s color - everywhere. You immediately feel isolated from the rest of the city, able to breathe. When the stairs run out, you’re on top of a beautiful 50-ft limestone overhang, overlooking Vickery Creek.

Its a fantastic spot for the mini-adventure date, (and an insta-friendly one). If you can hold hands and earn your way to the creek from the top of the rock, walking across the cool, shallow water serves as a great , handing-holding, stumbly, laughy, romantic moment op.

There’s 10-12 climbing routes for beginners as well as some pretty advanced stuff. (5.6 - 5.12a) Its a great place to really learn the sport, refine technique, and take a group of folks from different skill-ranges. There used to be bolted anchors at the top of the cliff here that are now clipped. Some say it was the city of Roswell, some say it was angry dads. Regardless, its unsafe. Do not use them. The good news is theres some great trees to anchor to at the top. Back it up with trad gear in some stable cracks at the top, and top rope away! On the overhanging face, which contains “Rumors Roof” (5.10b), falling on top rope is a blast with a huge swing out towards the creek.

Its a great place for photographers to be able to just walk into, and be creatively inspired, and shoot some beauty, especially in the fall. Most of the area is shaded and provided with some gorgeous glowing natural light that shifts all throughout the day. You can shoot into the sun through the trees, with gorgeous limestone rock in the backdrop, or wait on the overcast day, to shoot in the middle of the creek for high contrast with the darker shadows in the shaded areas.

Along the creek, lies a slice of just over a mile of the Vickery Creek Trail Complex, winding from Roswell Mill, almost to the Chattahoochie.

Allenbrook is located on Atlanta Street in Roswell, right off of the Chattahoochee just across the Street from Avia Riverside, just before Land of a Thousand Hills coffee shop. There's a 3 dollar honor system parking fee.
