LOCATION:  Variable – will be travelling throughout program.  Starting in Vancouver, concluding in Toronto

Hudson’s Bay has unveiled the Grand Portage to celebrate Canada’s 150th. A multi-faceted program that includes a journey that will see a team of adventurers paddle and portage across the country from June 22 to August 26.   Using the Hudson’s Bay iconic striped canoe as a symbol of Canadian pride and adventure, our team will set off on June 22, 2017, traveling West to East from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia.  Their adventure will culminate in Ottawa on August 26, 2017, where Hudson’s Bay and Trans Canada Trail will celebrate the 100% Connection of The Great Trail with a commemorative event.   Along their journey, the Grand Portage team will engage with communities, special guests and Canadian icons and will share their stories with Canadians on social media using #HBGrandPortage.  

In addition, Hudson’s Bay, in partnership with Cadillac Fairview, is excited to launch the Grand Portage Celebration Tour coming to 10 flagship locations across Canada.   The Celebration Tour features a pop-up retail experience, inspired by Hudson’s Bay’s iconic trading posts of the past where Canadians will be able to purchase commemorative merchandise from Hudson’s Bay’s Grand Portage collection.  Proceeds from the sale of all Grand Portage merchandise will go towards completing the remaining 2,200 kilometers of The Great Trail to celebrate Canada’s 150th.


The Lead Adventurer will play an integral role in the coordination and delivery of the cross country HB Grand Portage event.  As much of the event programming will occur in the outdoors and on waterways across the country, the Lead Adventurer will be a seasoned outdoor enthusiast with significant paddling and navigating experience, and be knowledgeable in all laws, regulations and safety guidelines as it pertains to operating a canoe in different types of waterways across Canada. In addition, the Lead Adventurer will take on a range of other responsibilities (as outlined below) and be looked upon to support the rest of the team as needed throughout the program.     

We are seeking an energetic, personable and outgoing individual who possesses a sense of adventure, a passion for the outdoors and is keen on making the Grand Portage a great success!     

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead Adventurer and subject matter expert on all technical canoeing elements 
• Lead navigator and instructor as it pertains to all water and paddling activations 
• Designated on-water safety specialist, ensuring all participants that are involved in water activations are safe, secure, and understand the safety protocols they must adhere to 
• Operational responsibilities include: managing and inspecting the condition of the equipment, ensuring  canoes and supplies are in good working condition, and returning equipment unto vehicles at the end of day

• Authentically represent the vision, mission, and values of the HB Grand Portage
• Act as a spokesperson for the program when necessary 
• Act as the narrator when describing the day’s events and activities to the public and/or on camera or in media interviews
• Engage with notable influencers as part of the programming   
• Participate in community engagement events, store visits, and press events
• Be confident in-front of camera as one of the main personalities and face of the brand

Secondary Responsibilities 

• Lead or support the coordination and delivery of non-water activations – such as hiking excursions, orienteering, urban portages etc. throughout the event 
• Interact and work in collaboration with other on-site stakeholders – sponsors, trail groups, influencers, guests etc. 
• Support Video/Photo capture to create content social media team as required

• Driver of secondary vehicle across the country
• Assist in loading/unloading of equipment
• Assist with daily reporting procedures 

• Provide support to other teams members while on the road as required 
• Coordination with HBC, Trans Canada Trail committee and other stakeholders as required 

Desired Skills
• Proven experience leading canoe and wilderness trips
• Current certification and/or training in canoeing/paddling courses, outdoor leadership, wilderness training or other related training is considered an asset (Please ensure to list  in resume) 
• Must possess First Aid & CPR certification
• Participation in applicable leadership programs or related experiences
• A background working in the outdoors 
• Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with the public, internal, and external stakeholders 
• Excellent organization and time management skills, with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and work effectively with minimal supervision
• Excellent problem solving skills to deal with issues and challenges as they arise
• Excellent leadership skills with the ability to take initiative when necessary 
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy; high standards for quality
• Highly motivated and proud to be part of the team 
• Positive attitude and sense of humour are essential
• Bilingual (English/French) an asset
• Must possess license, clean driving record, and comfortable driving throughout program as required
• Clean criminal background check
• Influential on social media and happy to promote the Portage on their own channels
• Be confident in-front of camera as one of the main personalities of the program
