An amazing traditional village hidden in the forested mountains of a tropical desert island. Amazing architecture, tons of wildlife, and great coffee. This hike is challenging and totally worth it.

Starting at the trailhead a few hundred feet above sea level, you will hike along a rough rock road with a slight incline for around 40 minutes. You will pass over a creek and start entering the forests of Flores.

The rock road gives way to a trail at a river rest stop. Here you can stop and wash your face with the fresh water before starting the steady incline. You will now be in the forest and your trail will be shaded or guarded from rain for most of the trail.

Hiking for apprx. 2 hours until you reach the brim of the cauldera at 1300 feet, you will be hiking up, up, up, and up. Don't forget to take in the beautiful jungle around you. There is lots of flora and fauna to explore with the elevation changes.

Upon reaching the brim, you will be able to see Wae Rebo village and will embark on a slight descent in elevation. You will hike for apprx. 30 minutes down towards the village, across a seemingly terrifying (yet sturdy) bamboo bridge, and find yourself at the arrival platform. Here you will ring the bamboo bell to alert the village that guests are coming.

From here you make your way down the narrow path and into the village's traditional house. At this point you can stay for coffee and a local lunch and begin your descent, or you can spend the night with the village in one of their traditional homes.

There is a bonus hike if you decide to spend the night as well. They won't tell you, but if you ask they'll take you to the waterfall that is a 200m descent down a narrow and slippery trail. There is a perfect swimming hole at the bottom of the waterfall and it is unbelievably scenic. This is a must do add on if you plan on staying the night!
