Mountain Bike 'Around the Mountain' at Bogus Basin

9.5 Miles Round Trip - 1450 ft gain - Loop Trail

Rip just over nine miles of single track on one of the best all-around mountain bike trails in Idaho. Single tracks like this is the reason why you got into mountain biking in the first place.

'Around the Mountain' is a local mountain bike favorite in Boise. To get there, head up Bogus Basin Road for the full 16 miles until you get to the ski parking lot. Park in the line of cars facing the ski slope.

Once you've checked your bike and you're ready to ride, take the trail that begins just under the ski lift. This trail is called Deer Point. Deer Point climbs for a ways before reaching the start of Around the Mountain but is never super steep. In all, the elevation gain is around 1,450' and the first twenty minutes covers most of this climb.

Trail signs for Around the Mountain will tell you when you've reached the correct single track. You'll have to cross over a few brown beams towards the top that protect riders from barreling through dirt roads. If you catch the trail in the springtime, this is where the view is the best because of the blooming wildflowers.

The AoM single track takes you through dense forest, through berm combos, over creeks and bridges, and past unique rock formations. Beginner riders should use caution as there are some dangerous obstacles throughout the ride.

Once Around the Mountain transitions towards the bottom of the mountain, do yourself a favor and jump on the bottom trail called Morningstar. Wooden features highlight this short trail and it eventually spits you back out into the parking lot.

Lift service occasionally runs during the summer months at Bogus Basin. Catch Bogus earlier in the season for cooler temperatures and a greener landscape. As always, be sure to be respectful on the trails and yield to uphill riders.

Happy riding!

Overall rating:

Best Foothills Mountain Biking

I've spoken with the Ridge to Rivers management team and they all agree this is the best trail in the foothills. Good series of ups and downs and the views are great all around. Nice shots!
