Description

Added by Dusty Klein

Freddie's Stack Rock is an 11-mile trail loop, which is great for a hike or mountain bike ride. You'll get the very best view of Boise and the surrounding valley as well as crisp, clean air at 5,200 feet.

The trail to Stack Rock is a well maintained path that generates a lot of attention due to its special destination. The famed rock overlooks the City of Trees and surrounding Treasure Valley. This trek is popular among locals because of its proximity to the city and its spectacular views.

Getting There

From Boise, take Bogus Basin Road 13.1 miles to a small parking area just off of the road to the left. The trail begins from this parking area and the path is easy to locate below. Don't worry about getting lost, the trail is well-marked along the 11-mile trek.

The Trail

The trail is wide and accommodates mountain bikers as well as hikers and trail runners. The terrain is mild and generally flat until about half a mile from the destination. This last stretch is steep but most definitely worth the sweat—as you approach the rock protruding form the trees, you get to see how big this thing actually is. The higher you climb, the better the view you receive from both sides of the rock. Be careful, though—there are gaps in the rocks and it's not recommended to climb unless you're confident you can get up AND down.

Autumn is the prime season for this hike because of the vibrant colors and crisp, clean air. Snowshoeing in the winter would also be an awesome adventure.

Freddy's Stack Rock Loop Reviews

I followed the directions given and it did get us to the trail head but when we got 4.5 miles in, a biker said there was still about two more miles to go until the rock. So there must be another trail head but I am not sure where that would be? Other than not making it to the end point the hike was stunning and we thoroughly enjoyed this trail! I think it’s more of a beginners trail for hikers despite what the other reviewers said

Great hike but like others said I would not say it for beginners. Don’t be fooled by the fire/logging roads that are about .5 miles in as it only lasts for about .75 miles and then goes back to nice tree canopies for the rest of the hike. I thought the trail head was well marked but it is a true 8.1-9 miles round trip. Most of it’s flat but you have some solid elevation climbs at the start and end which can wear out inexperienced hikers. This is pretty active trail and also used by mountain bikers so you most likely will not be alone out there if your taking it during spring/summer/fall.

Super great hike, takes awhile and the trail was relatively hard to find. Took a wrong turn a time or two! Great view once you get to the top, but not a beginner hike.
