Directions to Iron Creek Trailhead:
From Stanley, head West on ID 21. In approximately 1 mile, you with turn left onto FR 619. Follow this road for approximately 2-3 miles until you reach the trailhead. There is a small gravel parking lot, outhouse, and entrance sign at the trailhead.
The Trail:
The trail starts of flat and rocky. About 1 mile in, you will pass a sign indicating you have officially entered the Sawtooth Wilderness. It is here the elevation makes its appearance with a shallow beginning that gradually gets steeper. Switchbacks will become your best friend the further you go. At the same time, the wilderness opens up and provides breathtaking views of Idaho's unique Sawtooth Mountains.
About 4 miles in, you will have the option to turn off to Alpine Lake or continue on to Sawtooth Lake. If you continue on, then there will be several scenic overlooks to stop, rest, and soak up the view before you take on the last, and most challenging, mile of your hike to Sawtooth Lake.
Sawtooth Lake:
When you arrive, the trail spits you out on a skinny end of the lake. Pick a direction and go explore! It is moderately windy next to the lake, so having additional layers of clothing will come in handy. Now that you're here, find your picnic spot, interact with the local chipmunks, snap some photos, and simply enjoy your company and the beauty that surrounds you.
