One of the most picturesque beaches on the Big Island. A safe place for the family to swim and snorkel.

Mauna Kea is known as one of the most picturesque beaches on the Big Island, if not the world. This beach is predominately a sandy bottom and only gets about 10 feet deep, making it an easy and safe place for a swim. If you spend the entire day here, bring your snorkel gear, and head out on the north side of the beach near the rocks. This is where the reef starts and will have the most sea life. After you're done swimming, snorkeling, or chillin' on the beach, head up to the Mauna Kea Resort to grab a couple drinks and take in the sunset. Once the sun goes down, look for the spotlights that the hotel shines in the water. The light attracts and illuminates the plankton, which more importantly attract the Manta Rays!

Pro Tip: Get there before 9:00am. There are only 40 parking spots for non-hotel guests and they go quick. Once they're taken, you have to wait for someone to leave and who wants to do that?

Catch a Sunset at Kauna'oa (Mauna Kea) Beach Reviews

The last few times I was there visiting family it was changed to 40 non hotel guest parking spots instead of 25! Still though, get there early to get a spot because they go incredibly fast.
