A Guide to Parramatta: What to Do

If you want to experience a different side of Sydney, come to Parramatta!

By: Geraldine Mills + Save to a List

Parramatta in Western Sydney is well known as a historically significant town. However, the city has experienced rapid growth over the past 10 years and is only expected to continue expanding. With this growth, its attractions and culture have become more than just historical sites. From its relatively small beginnings, Parramatta has now become the sixth largest central business district in Australia. It is a culturally diverse area with great food and shopping, with lots of festivals and events happening year-round.

As mentioned previously, Parramatta is well known for its historical landmarks. It offers a fascinating insight into Australia’s colonial past. Old Government House and Hambleton Cottage are a must see for visitors and history buffs.

However, if you are more interested in what’s happening now, rather than a hundred years ago, then there are even more places to check out in this lively town.

From Sydney.com

Parramatta Farmers Market: This has only just recently opened and offers a wide range of fresh food. Over 20 farmers bring in their produce. The market is held every Friday from 7:30am till 2pm.

Riverside Brewing Co:  these guys are the makers of great 100% Australian beer. They are dedicated to brewing all natural boutique beers, free from additives and preservatives. Drop by for a tasting. Their cellar door hours are Friday 2pm to 6pm and Saturday 12pm to 4pm.

Holiday Inn: Holiday Inn Parramatta offers 181 accommodation rooms over 6 levels and only minutes away from Parramatta Westfield, all major public transport links and an array of restaurants.

Holiday Inn Parramatta accommodation is located just 24km from the Sydney CBD, rich in historical and contemporary sights and attractions. Start off with a scenic walk through the Harris Park Heritage Walk, or maybe a stroll down the picturesque riverbank of Queen’s Wharf Reserve where you can see the location Governor Philip arrived in 1788 to establish Australia’s second settlement. From this location, you can catch a ferry to variety of locations around Sydney.

Other heritage sites that you can visit while staying here include the Experiment Farm, which was Australia’s first private farm. Ex-convict James Ruse developed the farm in 1793 and features an Indian bungalow built in 1793 by Surgeon Harris, the bungalow contains 1830s furniture and exhibition of the life of James Ruse.

African Village Market: pick up some unique gifts and souvenirs at this great market. You can find African bags, jewellery, clothing, shoes and other hand-crafted accessories. The authentic African food served here also comes highly recommended.

Parramatta Winter light Festival: this festival celebrates the season and creates a winter wonderland right in the centre of Parramatta. There is even an ice rink, which is bound to be a hit with both adults and kids alike. Watch the nightly light show at one of the outdoor bars or food stalls. There will also be live music and entertainment on the weekends. The festival is being held from 27th June till the 13th of July this year.

Jubilee Hall: this performance venue is located within the Paramatta Town Hall. It can hold up to 100 comfortably for a show, and about 50 for a party or function. If you are in town and looking for something to do, check out what gigs or events are on there.

From Weekend Notes

Eat Street (Church Street): this popular street has been affectionately nicknamed ‘Eat Street’ due to the amazing amount of food on offer. Take your taste buds for a walk and try some of the restaurants that line the street. From Sicilian to Thai or Italian, there is a range of options available.

Riverside Theatre: on Church Street, too. They have been serving up a diverse range of productions from both international and domestic theatre groups. Riverside has put on a festival just for the little one (of all ages) from September 29 to October 4! A world of magic and imagination is coming alive through live theatre, a circus, storytelling, music, and films. The festival has free and ticketed events, so you don’t have to worry if you’re strapped for cash. There are also “relaxed performances for children with specific needs” and the events have easy access. Live performances from Circus Oz to Lah-Lah Live will keep your kids enthralled, or if they’re more of a movie-goer check out their host of films, from The Princess Bride to the new Cinderella film!

From comedy nights to high-brow Shakespeare plays, to the experimental pieces deriving from contemporary dance, Riverside Theatre is sure to provide your soul with the dose of culture that it is craving.

James Ruse Reserve: Water Playground. The weather is getting warmer and the water park has just opened! The kids will love firing the water cannons and running through the water tunnels. If it’s still too cold, there’s a skate park, the large climbing frame to keep kids busy and a few picnic tables for lunch. If you’re coming by car, you’re in luck because there’s a car park off the street.
