Kiteboarding Downwinder from Hobe Sound to Jupiter
Hobe Sound, Florida
Description
Added by Shaun, Debbi Jackson
Ride waves or boost airs in uncrowded conditions along this classic stretch of Florida coast. Kite past Blowing Rocks Perserve, Coral Cove, and Jupiter Inlet.
With a North or Northeast wind blowing, park a car at Ramp 33 Jupiter (Kite beach) and load all of your kite gear in a friends car and drive north up US1 12 miles to Bridge Road in Hobe Sound, turn right and head east. Take your time and enjoy the tunnel of trees, and avoid the speeding ticket. Once at the beach rig to the south of the swim area flags, and respect all other beach goers while entering the water. For the first 8 miles it's nothing but waves and beach. Then keep an eye out for Blowing Rocks Preserve, and give yourself plenty of sea room, this quarter mile stretch of razor sharp rocks is unforgiving. At the south end of Blowing Rocks is where you will encounter the largest waves of the Downwinder. Next is Coral Cove park, marked by just a small outcrop of rock on the beach. The waves here are also big and break hard over a rock bottom in some places. Another 1/2 mile and you will pass the Jupiter Inlet, again it would be wise to stay well off shore to avoid the rock jetties and tidal flows. The last couple of miles are easy, just stay outside of the swim area buoys at Carlin Park public beach. After enjoy a craft beer and some killer grinds at Food Shack in Jupiter or Harry and the Natives in Hobe Sound after picking up the car.
