Best Areas in Southern California for Hiking

Southern California has it all. It has lush mountains, beautiful beaches and miles of gorgeous desert terrain. With thousands of trails to choose from, it's an outdoor enthusiast's dream. Here is a list of the best areas in Southern California for all of my hiking lovers.

  1. Chantry Flats

Chantry Flats is a popular destination for hikers of all skill levels. The majority of the trails are well shaded, making it a great area to hike year round. Some great trails at Chantry Flats include: Sturtevant Falls, Winter Creek, Hermit Falls, Mt Zion and Mt Wilson. The Gabrielino Trail runs through Chantry Flats as well so it's a great place for overnight backpacking. If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, many people go cliff diving off of Hermit Falls. I personally don't recommend it, due to low water levels but it doesn't stop the people from jumping. One of the best parts about hiking through Chantry Flats however are the beautiful cabins along the way.

2. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park should be on every Southern California residents bucket list. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Seeing the park via the hiking trails is the best way to get the full experience of the park. Some great trails include: 49 Palms, Mt Ryan and Skull Rock.

3. Icehouse Canyon and Manker Flats

If you are looking for challenging all day hikes, look no further than Manker Flats and the Icehouse Canyon trailhead. Mt Baldy, which is considered a rite of passage for outdoor enthusiasts can be accessed via Manker Flats. Other hikes in the area include: Cucamonga Peak, Ontario Peak, and the 3 T's. Each hike is on the more challenging side however they are all worth a visit. These trails are at higher elevations so they are best be hiked during the summer and early fall.
