The highest mountain in the Rockies and the second highest in the contiguous United States.360-panorama views from the summitDuration: Half dayElevation Gain: 4,700 feetDistance: 9 miles round trip

Accessing the summit of Mt. Elbert via the North Elbert Trail is a class 1 hike.

Shortly after starting up the path, take a left at the junction onto the Colorado Trail and take this for 1 mile before veering right at the next junction to begin on the Mt. Elbert trail to the summit. The first 1.6 miles are in forest cover, before reaching the tree line.

Once out of the tree line the trail is clearly visible and easy to follow as the terrain becomes steeper. Near 13,700 feet the terrain becomes rugged and the trail leads to the right before regaining the ridge at a flat area. From here it’s a fairly easy hike to another flat area and a false summit. After reaching the second flat area near 14,300, the summit will come into view. Once on the summit ridge, hike southwest to the top.The summit is very rocky and contains a half circle of rocks which doubles as a seat or great wind block while enjoying lunch or an afternoon snack. Enjoy the 360-panorama view from the summit, including a great view of neighboring Mt. Massive and Twin Lakes.

On the way down, enjoy the views, but be aware of steep areas with potential loose rocky soil. As you descend back into the forest cover veer left at the first junction, back onto the Colorado Trail, and then right at the next junction, which will take you back to the parking lot.

Tips:Start early to avoid any afternoon storms and possible crowdsBegin your hike before 4:30am to experience the sunrise just above tree line.

Directions: North Elbert Trail – From Leadville, travel 3 miles south on US Highway 24. Take Colorado 300 west for ¾ a mile to Lake County Road 11. Follow signs to Elbert Creek Campground. The parking lot and trailhead are just past the campground on the left.
